Why Choose Linen?

Why Choose Linen? The health benefits of Linen and why it’s our go-to fabric!

The story began when a little girl sat on her Babushka’s sewing machine, waiting for Pampusky to cook on a Monday morning.

Following the dreams of my Ukrainian grandparents who fled warn-torn Europe for Australia to improve quality of life and ended up working on a crop farm in a little country town. My designs allude to secluded beach getaways, natural living and a slow, considered lifestyle.

Coming from working in the Fashion Industry for numerous companies and watching fast fashion take over the industry, I thought to myself ‘something had to change’.  I swapped Tencel for Linen and never looked back. My love for Linen grows every day and the main reason is because as a Mum of 4, it is so easy to care for. Living in Queensland with our scorching Summers meant for me to remove majority man-made fibre garments out of the wardrobe (there’s a couple I can’t live without…just yet!) and bring in more of the natural fibres.

What I didn't realise then but know now, is that my desire for more natural fibres in mine and the kid’s wardrobes was soon to become a healthy obsession, that lead to what Wildflower Lane is today.

So, let me tell you some benefits of Linen which really surprised me as I was wearing Linen long before I really understood it’s benefits and how good it is for your skin.

  1. Breathability and Temperature Regulation:

Linen is renowned for its exceptional breathability, making it an ideal fabric for all seasons. Its natural fibres allow air to flow freely, keeping you cool in hot weather and preventing overheating. During colder months, linen acts as an insulating layer, retaining body warmth and providing a cosy feel.

  1. Hypoallergenic and Gentle on Skin:

For those with sensitive skin or allergies, linen is a true blessing. Its hypoallergenic properties make it suitable for even the most delicate skin types. Unlike synthetic fabrics, linen is free from harsh chemicals and irritants, making it a soothing and gentle option for everyday wear.

  1. Antibacterial and Antimicrobial:

Linen is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial, meaning it resists the growth of harmful bacteria and odours. This makes it an excellent choice for garments that come into direct contact with your skin, providing a fresh and clean feeling throughout the day. You also don’t need to wash your garment after you wear it. Let it air out!

  1. Absorbent and Quick-Drying:

One of the most remarkable qualities of linen is its high absorbency. It can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp or uncomfortable. This feature makes linen an excellent choice for summer clothing, as it wicks away sweat and keeps you feeling dry. On another note, linen dries quickly, reducing the risk of bacterial growth and unpleasant odours.

  1. UV Protection:

Linen's dense weave offers a natural defence against harmful UV rays, providing you with added sun protection when spending time outdoors. Keep your skin safe from the sun's harmful effects while enjoying the comfort and style of your linen garments.

  1. Environmentally Friendly:

Not only is linen good for your health, but it's also a sustainable and eco-friendly choice. Linen is derived from the flax plant, which requires minimal water and pesticides to grow, making it a renewable and low-impact fibre. Additionally, flax plants are biodegradable, contributing to the reduction of textile waste.

Did you learn something new? Isn’t it amazing how one fabric can sustain all these properties yet still feel and look good. When you choose to buy linen clothes not only are you stylish and comfortable, but you also now know the benefits it has on your health and our environment.  Wildflower Lane was born to educate and help shift from mass production and using man-made fibres to a sustainable clothing world and being more conscious on minimising waste.
